Mayor Rick Meehan issued a local state of emergency on Sunday as Hurricane Sandy approaches.

Mandatory evacuation has been ordered for residents of downtown Ocean city,  that is, all areas south of 17th Street. Voluntary evacuation is suggested for known low-lying areas in the town. (Isn’t the whole Eastern Shore a low-lying area? Just kidding, sort of. But parts of Berlin flooded a few weeks ago in a heavy rainstorm.)

Per the state of emergency, the mayor has ordered the beach closed to all persons for the duration. The Inlet Parking Lot will close at 5 p.m. Sunday afternoon.

Worcester County plans to open shelters at 1 p.m. Sunday. Ocean City buses will provide transportation to county shelters for people with special needs. The Convention Center will be the pick-up location for people needing transportation, beginning at 1 p.m. Sunday.

Further advisories expected soon. Please check the town government web site http://www.oceancitymd.gov/
