Free Flu Shot Clinics Scheduled

Posted on October 13, 2011

Atlantic General Hospital has scheduled a series of free flu shot clinics this fall, as it does every year when the flu season approaches. The flu shots are available to those age 13 and older.

How does Atlantic General do these flu shots for free? We’re not talking about a few shots, we’re talking hundreds. I don’t know how they do it, but Atlantic General is an unusually community-spirited organization. And the fact that they can offer public flu clinics, staffed for high efficiency, gives me hope that we will be able to solve the puzzle of health care for everyone who needs it in America. It’s worth noting that the flu shot clinics are a preventive health initiative. Who knows how much the program saves the entire community in sickness, suffering, doctor’s visits, and lost time at work.

Flu clinics have been scheduled in the lobby of the Atlantic General Hospital in Berlin on Wednesdays, Oct. 19, Oct. 28, Nov. 2 and Nov. 16, 2011. The clinics will be open from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m.

The hospital makes things even more convenient by scheduling clinics in several nearby towns.

  • Snow Hill, at the Taylor Bank, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 18.
  • Ocean City, at the Townsend Medical Center, 10th Street and Philadelphia Avenue, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 21.
  • Pocomoke, at the Pocomoke Fire Station, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 1.

Note that the clinics in the towns have different hours than the clinics at the hospital. For more information about the free flu shot clinics, call Atlantic General Hospital at 410-641-9FLU.

If you wait until the final flu clinic at the hospital in mid-November, you may find yourself  standing in a line that goes down the sidewalk and around the corner. One year, the weather was so cold that the staff moved the line into the lobby, down a long hall, around a corner, down another hall, and finally back to the lobby, where seven nurses were giving shots and seven other people handling the paperwork. Very efficient. The shot takes a minute, but standing in line can take an hour. So don’t wait until the last flu clinic.

I’ve found in the past that I can walk into the flu clinic at Townsend Medical Center in Ocean City, get a shot, and be out the door in just a few minutes. Your mileage may vary.
