Walk the Boards for St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital Apr. 9

Posted on March 31, 2011

The eighth annual fundraiser for St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital will be held on the boardwalk in Ocean City, Maryland, on Saturday, April 9, 2011. Registration begins at 9 a.m. in front of the tram station at the south end of the boardwalk.

Some St. Jude's volunteers on a rainy, chilly walk in 2009. We're hoping for nice spring weather on Saturday.

The donation to participate in the walk is $15, and all donations are tax deductible. Walkers are encouraged to solicit additional donations by signing up sponsors for the walk. Students can earn three hours of public service credit by participating.

St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital has long been a leader in research on childhood cancer, pediatric AIDS, and genetic immune disorders. Donations help provide treatment for cancer-stricken children and research for a cancer cure. For every dollar raised, 81 cents is used for current or future needs of the hospital.

If you’re planning to be in Ocean City on April 9, “Let’s Walk the Boards for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital” is a great opportunity to enjoy a spring walk on the world-famous boardwalk. The oceanfront boardwalk stretches three miles, but participants may walk any distance they choose, starting at the tram station at the south end. Plenty of parking is available in the Inlet Parking Lot. Many hotels have low off-season rates in effect during April.

Since 1962, St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital has treated over 20,000 children from the United States and 70 foreign countries, without regard to race, religion, or ability to pay. Cancer survivor rates for Acute Lymphocytic Leukemia are miraculous, with 94 percent of patients surviving today compared to four percent when the hospital opened in 1962.

The St. Jude’s Hospital fundraiser in Ocean City was formerly held in the fall. It has been moved to April this year to avoid conflict with other charitable events in the resort.
