Frank Kratovil Spending Taxpayer Money

Posted on April 12, 2010

Did you receive the interesting mailing from Rep. Frank Kratovil? It came in the mail on Saturday. Rep. Kratovil represents those of us who live in Maryland’s First Congressional District.  He mailed us two classy fliers in late 2009, and one earlier this year. This fourth flier is the nicest one yet, in my opinion.

Rep. Frank Kratovil

It’s a “VETERANS LEGISLATIVE UPDATE,” with a red, white and blue theme. On the front there’s an artistic photo of two gray-haired veterans saluting, against the background of an American flag. And in the corner, a nice portrait of Frank Kratovil, with a flag in the background. Very patriotic. Suitable for framing, in my opinion.

There’s four more photos on the other side, showing how Rep. Kratovil is “Helping Veterans and Their Families.” Did you know that your congressman provides all kinds of “Constituent Services for Veterans?” In fact, the name “Kratovil” comes up 12 times in this flier. And if you look closely, you’ll find the following 10-word sentence (you might have to put on your reading glasses to find it):

“This mailing was prepared, published and mailed at taxpayer expense.”

Taxpayer expense? Isn’t there a primary election coming up in five months? And a general election in seven months? If there isn’t a law against congressmen spending taxpayer money to advertise during an election year, there ought to be.

This is the kind of job benefit that gives incumbents an unfair advantage in elections. This is the kind of petty corruption that makes voters want to throw up. I’m not a Republican, I’m not a member of the Tea Party. I’m proud to be a liberal Democrat, and it makes me sick to see a Democratic congressman ripping off the taxpayers. Just my opinion.

It’s nice to know that Rep. Frank Kratovil is on the job, doing everything he can to help veterans. I believe we owe a great debt to veterans. They deserve the very best health care available, plus fully paid college or job training.

I think the taxpayer money Rep. Kratovil spent to prepare, print and mail this fancy advertising could have been better spent hiring doctors and nurses for Veterans Hospitals. Just my opinion.

BTW, Rep. Frank Kratovil represents Maryland’s Eastern Shore, and portions of Harford, Baltimore and Anne Arundel Counties.
