Easter Sunday on the Boardwalk in Ocean City

Sunny, Cloudless, Warm

This snazzy roadster is the sportiest way to go on the boardwalk. Ray says it can be rented for $25 an hour at Dandy Don’s Bike Rentals, @ 12th Street in Ocean City. It comes complete with AM/FM radio, but of course, zero horsepower. It’s the original “green” car. You provide the energy. Start pedaling.

You don’t have to go to D.C. to see cherry blossoms. Bill Murphy says this one, about a block from the Boardwalk, was planted about 30 years ago by the previous owner of the house. Of course the Tidal Basin has a more extensive display.

I’m going out on a limb and declaring today the Best Easter ever in Ocean City, and see if anyone wants to argue. Have we ever had this many people in town on the first weekend in April?

The Ocean City Boardwalk was busy . . .

I slept late, after working until 11 p.m. the last three nights, and made it to the 11:30 a.m. Mass at St. Luke’s Catholic Church (the latest Mass I could find).  The church, beautifully remodeled last year, was crowded. I mean standing-room only. Worshipers standing three and four deep at the back of the church, and dozens more spilling out into the entrance way.  You’d have to go to an Orioles Opening Day game to see a bigger crowd. Of course, not to exaggerate, the number of visitors in town this weekend is only a small fraction of what we’ll see in July and August.

. . . At times, the Boardwalk almost seemed crowded, but not as crowded as the church.

Have we ever had a prettier, sunnier Sunday in April? Good thing, too, because Saturday was overcast and chilly. Still, in the past five days, starting with Wednesday, Ocean City has been blessed with four perfect, warm and sunny, Spring days. Four out of five is pretty good, any time of year.

After church, I stopped for an open house at a beautiful, nearly new bay-side condo (which I will never be able to afford). Then I took a walk on the Boardwalk. Me and a few thousand friends. Most businesses were open, and actually had customers. Lots and lots of families, many pedaling some form of human-powered contraption. Even regular old bicycles. Would you like two wheels, three wheels, or four wheels? I think the more wheels they have, the more you pay. Rent it by the hour or the day.

I doubt that the temperature officially hit 70, but with the brilliant sunshine and no wind, it felt like at least 70. It was definitely warm enough for many people to be sunbathing on the beach. (Remember, it’s April.)

At this time of year, the wind is key. If the wind is high, the air feels chilly. If the wind is calm, it feels warm, or even hot.

So was this the best Easter weekend ever in OC, or what? I’m taking this as a leading economic indicator for a successful summer season in the resort. Remember, you saw it here first.
