Opponents Rage Against Health Care

Anger over health care has ripped a jagged tear in the fabric of American society.  I hope the damage can be mended, but the prospect is for still more vindictive rhetoric, stoking the anger and deepening the divide.

Emotions on both sides ran unusually high Sunday. The Democrats were celebratory after winning, but they seemed more relieved than exultant.

Outside the Capitol, the anger of Tea Party protesters turned ugly.  On the floor of the House, the disrespectful shouting by some Republicans (not all) was shocking to hear.

At the end of a long day,  a few Republican congressmen egged the crowd on. When the protesters shouted  “Kill the bill!” over and over, no one could doubt the depth of the divide in the American electorate.

I haven’t seen anything quite like this since the resistance to integration and civil rights in the 1960s.
