Welcome to the new http://www.MarylandOnMyMind.com

A PATCH OF WHITE ICE on the coastal bay west of Ocean City, last Sunday, Jan. 3, 2010. This photo of the ice, with a part of the OC skyline in the background, was taken from the west end of a street in North Ocean City.

And Welcome to Winter, 2010

Could the temperature really fall to 14 degrees before dawn in Ocean City, this Sunday morning? That’s the forecast. With 10 to 15 mph winds, that would make the wind-chill — around zero?

Sunday will be another bright and sunny day, with a high around 31 and winds 10 to 20 mph. If you’re going for a stroll on the Boardwalk, please bundle up.

The unusual siege of ice-cold weather throughout the southern and central parts of the U.S. has been the story of the week. I guess it’s going to be that kind of Winter. We already had a once-in-a-decade snowstorm in Central Maryland before Christmas. This past week, the Eastern Shore received one to two inches of snow overnight Thursday into Friday morning. I thought we had two inches of snow in Ocean City, but most folks think it was closer to one inch. Sure-fire prediction: The cost of oranges and orange juice is going straight up.

SNOW ON THE BOARDWALK. This is at the extreme southern end of the Boardwalk, looking north, about midday Friday.
Sems to me, we don’t need all these rules, this time of year. Just my opinion.

Blogging, 2.0

This post marks the official transition from Maryland On My Mind, version 1.0, which began in October 2007. The blog registered 92,479 hits through yesterday, Jan. 9, 2010. This Sunday morning, the old MarylandOnMyMind.Wordpress.com url address is being retired, and the new, easier-to-remember address for Maryland On My Mind version 2.0 is http://www.MarylandOnMyMind.com . . . If you typed in or linked to the old address, you will be automatically redirected to the new one. Still, you might want to update your bookmarks and links.

It is now 2:25 a.m., and I am bleary-eyed. (A blogger’s work is never done.)  I’ll write a full report on my blogging experience to date, and my plans for the blog going forward, in a few days. (Blogging is a little like college — I’ve got to give up all-nighters, and start getting more sleep.) Right now, I’m going to post two more Ocean City winter photos, and call it a night.

For some really great ICE photos, you might want to take a look at this week’s Maryland Coast Dispatch and Ocean City Today. They are Ocean City’s two weekly newspapers. How many other small towns in America have two good, competing weekly newspapers under different ownership?

Despite the bitter cold, we’ve had a sunny week.
