Ocean City, Maryland, Midsummer 2009

Family Vacation Time

The next couple of weeks in Ocean City will be hot, sunny, happy and crowded. Daytime highs in the 80’s, sometimes hitting 90. Nighttime lows 65 to 75 degrees. One gas station reduced the price of regular to $2.41 today.

We’re at the peak of the summer vacation season here in Ocean City, Maryland — the second half of July and the first half of August. Some businesses are hiring extra help. The Boardwalk is crowded morning and night, and people linger on the beach well into the evening.

It’s family time — lots of exuberant children and relaxing parents. Restaurants are packed at dinnertime, and ice cream shops on the Boardwalk and Coastal Highway remain busy long after dark.

Family freebies on the Ocean City beach every weekday evening this summer:

  • Free movies Monday and Friday evenings, 27th Street and the beach. Children’s activities begin @ 7:30 p.m. Movies begin @ about 8:45 p.m.
  • Family beach Olympics Tuesday evenings, same place as the movies, @ 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.
  • Concerts on the beach Wednesday evenings, North Division Street and the beach @ 8 to 9:30 p.m.
  • Bonfire & story hour Thursday evenings, same place as the concerts @ 9 p.m.

And Sundaes at the Park on Sunday evenings, 6 to 8 p.m., at the Northside Park, 127th Street and the Bay. Free concerts for adults and activities for children. Ice cream for a fee.

It’s summer vacation, USA. Children stay up later than usual, because there is, after all, no school tomorrow. After dinner, they burn off energy playing on the beach, walking the Boardwalk, or riding the amusements. By midnight, the resort grows quiet. After a day in the ocean air, parents and children alike sleep soundly.

Also, Ocean City is the White Marlin Capital of the World.  The first annual Marlin Club Ladies Tournament is July 30 through Aug. 1. The 36th Annual White Marlin Open is Aug. 3 to 7; see the weigh-ins at Harbour Island Marina. The 51st Annual Labor Day White Marlin Tournament will be Sept. 3-6.

There’s more, of course. Golfing and fishing and boating and surfing. Visiting Assateague Island, taking pictures of the ponies, lunch and browsing in small-town Berlin. The summer isn’t long enough!

A happy summer to all!  I’ll be taking my usual August break from blogging. Like everyone who makes a living in Ocean City, I’ll be working.
