Is it beach art? Or is it playground equipment on the beach? Is it interactive and educational?

Like so much in life, it all depends on your perspective. A bench is nearby, so that parents can relax and watch their children play, and ponder the meaning of it all.

In this season of stress and uncertainty, it’s nice to remember that the best things in life are free.

This wooden single-engine airplane is on the beach at Fourth Street. It's not going anywhere, except in a child's imagination.

So it is in Ocean City, Maryland. The wide, sandy beach is free, free, free, from the Inlet to the Delaware line. Walking at the edge of the ocean is free. Playing in the surf is free. Building sand castles on the beach is free, and so is watching the waves roll to the shore. No extra charge for a suntan.

Strolling on the three-mile-long Boardwalk is free, and the bright lights at night are free. Countless benches are provided along the Boardwalk for resting and people-watching, free of course.

If you move to a faster drummer, jogging on the Boardwalk or on the firm sand at the water’s edge — both are free.

A sunrise over the ocean is priceless, as is a sunset over the bay. A summer romance, of course, cannot be planned or scheduled; it’s a mystery of fate and timing. But the summer moon belongs to everyone, and memories cannot be purchased at any price.

An amazing array of family activities are free in Ocean City. For example, the Ocean City Air Show is free for all to see from the beach and boardwalk on June 13 and 14. Ocean City puts on spectacular Fourth of July fireworks shows, free for all to see and celebrate. (This year, Fourth of July falls on July 4.)

Someday soon, I’ll post the times and places for the weekly free movies, concerts, and bonfires, and the family beach olympics. One of these free family events will be available on the Ocean City beach every evening, Monday through Thursday, during July and August.

A summer vacation in Ocean City sounds more and more like a pretty good deal. And it’s something everybody needs. Bernie Hayden
