That's long enough! Most of the participants enjoyed on a quick, bracing dip in the Atlantic, but quite a few stayed for a few moments to frolic in the surf.

Jan. 1, 2009, New Years Day, was a perfect winter day in Ocean City, Maryland. Dazzling sunshine, blue skies, light wind.

And at the 1 p.m. start time for the 15th Annual Penguin Swim on the beach, the temperature was hovering right around 36 degrees. The Atlantic Ocean water was said to be in the 42-48 degree range.

Hundreds of participants were in high spirits and ready to go, and at least three times as many spectators looked on and took pictures. When they couldn’t restrain themselves any longer, the first wave of swimmers raced into the ocean, followed by wave after wave of participants. Many turned right around and came back out, but quite a few stayed to frolic for a few minutes in the surf.
