Gov. Martin O’Malley announced this week an ambitious anti-hunger initiative, in partnership with the nonprofit agency Share Our Strength, aimed at ending childhood hunger in Maryland within five years.

“In Maryland, more than 184,000 kids don’t have ready or reliable access to the nutrition they need,” O’Malley said.

The Baltimore Sun reported that goals of the food initiative include the following:

  • Enroll 65,000 more students in the School Lunch and Breakfast Program
  • Increase participation in the Federal Food Stamp Program by 15 percent
  • Open 73 new licensed facilities participating in the Child and Adult Care Food Program
  • Increase participation in the Summer Meals Program by 49,000 children

O’Malley announced the initiative at Highlandtown Elementary-Middle School in Baltimore. A majority of the children at the school are beneficiaries of free or reduced-price meals.  – Bernie Hayden
