Will Blair Lee Move to Va.? Will Maryland Be Safer?

Blair Lee IV and Ron Smith were fulminating at full speed during the five-o’clock hour on WBAL Thursday afternoon.

Blair Lee was concerned about speed cameras on residential streets in Montgomery County. Mr. Lee complained to the WBAL audience that his wife had already received three tickets from the speed cameras. I hope Mrs. Lee wasn’t listening. Quite possibly she is innocent of the charges alleged by Mr. Lee.

B-4 added that he himself has not received a single ticket from the speed cameras, which he considers “surprising” for reasons he did not fully explain.

A talk-show caller suggested to Blair Lee that drivers who receive multiple speeding tickets might consider slowing down. The idea took Mr. Lee by surprise, or perhaps he resented the implication that speed limits should apply to his family. (The Lees were here before there was a stop light in Silver Spring. Blair Lee IV is the fourth generation of the once-powerful dynasty. For those who haven’t lived here long, B-4 is a Gazette columnist, real estate developer, and political critic-at-large. His father was acting governor of the state.)

Lee reasoned that if EVERYONE observed the speed limit, drivers would slow down, making traffic worse!

The caller accused Mr. Lee of being “hypocritical” about speeding. Mr. Lee harrumphed that he was NOT hypocritical about speeding; he was simply “frank” in acknowledging that he speeds.

When host Ron “Talk-Show Man” Smith repeated the word “hypocritical,” Mr. Lee took further offense, but Mr. Smith reassured him that being hypocritical is part of life.

A commercial break saved Mr. Lee from implicating himself or anyone else with further traffic offenses.

After the break, the talk turned to the “Millionaires’ Tax.” Mr. Smith pointed out that the new tax bracket will affect only the 6,000 most wealthy taxpayers in Maryland.

Mr. Lee asserted that neither rich people nor their CPAs are unintelligent; he concluded that the wealthy will all move to Virginia.

Questions:

  • WHEN will Blair Lee IV and Mrs. Lee leave for Virginia?
  • Will they have a yard sale?
  • What can we do to help them pack?
  • Most importantly, can the Lees write off the moving expenses?
  • And will Montgomery County’s residential streets be safer when the Lees are driving in Virginia?
