America And The World, 2008

“This may be the most unpredictable political year since 1968,” Joel Achenbach writes in The Washington Post’s final Outlook section of 2007, looking ahead to 2008.

And he isn’t talking about Pakistan.

Mr. Achenbach is, of course, writing about U.S. presidential politics in this election year. As 2008 begins, the Earth is beset by turmoil — war and violence, political upheaval, rapid-fire economic and technological change. America is beset by a presidential election.

There is the world; and here is America. “Today’s America looks rich and fat and comfortable compared with the 1968 version,” Achenbach writes.

He doesn’t say it, but I will: Societies that become too rich and fat and comfortable are subject to painful surprises. Politically and economically, the world is unstable. We hope 2008 will not be like 1968.   – Bernie Hayden
